River vs Seacoast April 7th, 2012
Home Opener Weekend
The ladies of Charles River enjoyed their spring home opener at Moakley Park in South Boston. Visitors Seacoast, of New Hampshire, represented the Lady Rats’ first DII competition since moving to that division following last year’s NERFU DIII Cup victory. A fit, focused Charles River came out flying against Seacoast, running for two tries on each of their first two sustained possessions. Though outsized by a strong Seacoast club, River successfully sustained a speed attack on the outside, relentlessly punching through the Seacoast back line in the first half. Captain Amanda Martin (inside center) led the charge, collecting three scores before the break. Fullback Maegan Hoover also shined, amassing a wealth of points both scoring tries and kicking conversions for the Lady Rats. Prop Julie “Traut” Trautwein tackled fearlessly, energizing a feisty pack.
River displayed depth of roster in the second forty minutes, refreshing half of the field positions during the break. A resilient Seacoast squad began to counter, swinging the momentum and catching a fresh set of Rats on their heels. The visitors chipped away, pushing forward carries through the middle for long gains. Despite the Seacoast surge, River had built itself enough of a lead to earn a healthy 48-25 victory. Charles River captains Amanda Martin and Jehanne Junguenet named lock Jess Packard and wing Sarah “Bee” Wetherbee MVPs of the match for their strong play. Seacoast selected Martin as their Woman of the Match for Charles River, capping the #12’s sparkling afternoon.
