For the second year in a row, Charles River Rugby participated in the East Boston Relay for Life fundraiser for cancer research. This requires individuals and teams to raise money and then ceremonially walk the track at the Sartori Memorial Stadium in East Boston from 6:00pm - 6:00am. This year, the relay was held on June 13 and many of us braved the rain to rep Charles River.

Alex Schmidt began her rugby career with the Northeastern University Lady Maddogs in 1997. Alex played in the backline throughout her 5 years at NU. During this time she also served as a team captain for the Maddogs.The next stop along Alex’s rugby adventure was to become a founding member of the Charles River Women’s Rugby Football Club in their inaugural 2005-2006 season. Alex followed that by continuing to lace her cleats up for the Rats for 8 years in total.

Charles River Women’s Rugby celebrated unprecedented success this spring, capturing the #3 spot in Northeast Rugby Union DII and earning their first ever USA Rugby regional playoff spot. Soon after, the Lady Rats shocked at the annual NERFU tournament, taking 2nd place in the Division I bracket. With attendance surging and an energetic new coaching staff at the helm, River is rolling.

If the
2014 Spring Season could be summed up in one word, it would be “improvement.” On and off the field, the Charles River Rats made great strides for the first half of
2014. The Rats became a competitive squad against Division II, evidenced by their last-second win over arch-rival Old Gold RFC and two closes losses against Providence and North Shore at the NERFU Cup. The key to this improvement was improved defense system and strong leadership by Captains Corey Lang and Tommy Conley.

Match Details: The Charles River Rats started their
2014 campaign against the defending Division III NERFU Champions, Seacoast RFC. Originally, Seacoast was slated to host the Rats; however field conditions forced the game location to a soggy Moakley Park.
Practice at the Dorchester YMCA is at 1:45pm on 3/8. Please bring $5 to help offset some of rental cost.
