Founded in 1973 as the Charles River Rugby Football Club and affectionately known as “The Rats,” began as a collaboration between players from Tufts University and Boston Rugby Football Club. Wearing distinctive green and orange jerseys that quickly became the club’s trademark, the Rats established themselves within the New England rugby community. Early achievements included winning the Portland RFC Invitational and reaching the semi finals of the Annual New England Tournament, setting the foundation for a decade of steady growth.

In 1980, the Rats earned promotion to Division I in New England after a decisive victory over the Berlin Strollers. The 1980s were marked by expansion and ambition, including a merger with Old North Bridge RFC of Concord, Massachusetts, which strengthened the club’s depth and membership. In 1985, Charles River finished second in NERFU Division I and advanced to the national playoffs. They defeated Binghamton RFC in the first round before falling 16 to 6 to Old Blue RFC, which went on to reach the national final. In 1986, the Rats defeated Boston Rugby Football Club 12 to 9, eliminating them from playoff contention for the first time in five years.

Following league restructuring in 1992, Charles River settled into Division II and quickly secured the top seed, holding that position for several seasons. The club also embraced international competition, touring Ireland in 1992 to face Suttonians, Ballinrobe, Dolphin, and De La Salle Palmerston, and touring Wales in 1995 to play Risca, Trebanos, and Bletchley.

After a difficult stretch in the early 2000s, success returned in 2005 under coach Fergal Hehir, when the Rats reached the playoffs and began a run of four consecutive winning seasons. In 2008, Hehir stepped down and Anthony Adams, a former player with Boston Irish Wolfhounds RFC, assumed leadership. Although the team endured a winless league season in 2009 and narrowly avoided relegation, it remained in Division II’s Daly Conference. In 2010, Hylton Haynes took over as men’s coach and helped stabilize the side.

The modern era has been defined by renewed competitiveness. In 2015, Charles River reached the Division III NERFU Cup final. Beginning in 2017, the Rats made the playoffs in each season that followed. A standout year came in 2022, when the club completed an undefeated regular season, captured the NERFU championship, and advanced to the Atlantic Super Regional Championship, falling 15 to 14 to Union County RFC in a closely contested match.

The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, fielding approximately 50 active men’s players each season. In 2024, Charles River completed a 7 and 1 regular season and defeated the Boston Irish Wolfhounds RFC 2nd XV, Lehigh Valley RFC, and Old Blue RFC to reach the Division III National Final Four, the deepest run in club history. Competing in Austin, Texas, the Rats fell in a hard fought semifinal to Colusa County, concluding a historic campaign.

From its founding in 1973 to its national breakthrough five decades later, Charles River Men’s Rugby has built a proud tradition defined by resilience, growth, and competitive excellence in New England and beyond.
